Effective May 1, we welcome Joey Moerings as senior lawyer within the inheritance law team of Wille Donker Lawyers. Joey brings valuable experience – both substantive and in working with people who are at a vulnerable, often emotional stage.

Joey’s interest in probate law arose during his studies, when he wrote a master’s thesis on two-step probate; a construction in the will where two people inherit the same estate in succession. He has since assisted numerous clients in settling estates. “Many people have no idea what to expect,” he says. “They are looking for something to hold on to, someone to take them through the process. Someone who makes it clear what is involved and helps them make good choices.”

From person to person

Although litigation is sometimes necessary, Joey prefers to seek resolution outside of court first. He sees that clients often cannot oversee the lead time of the legal route. “It’s important to find out what someone really wants to achieve in the settlement. Sometimes there are old hurts or no contact between family members,” he explains. “By talking to each other, person to person, you often reach a solution faster. One that everyone can move forward with. Only then do clients find the peace to process grief and close an emotional chapter.”

Making an impact

What appeals to Joey about the job? Every case is different. Joey: “You work with people, emotions and family histories. Your knowledge and skills make a difference in someone’s life. That remains special to witness.”

The inheritance law team

Within Wille Donker, Joey will work closely with Kimberly Rozema and Kim van der Bijl. Together, they will continue to build on the growth of the inheritance law section. The first impression? It is positive. Joey: “A nice atmosphere, nice people, and plenty of room to share and further develop my experience. I’m looking forward to it!”

Welcome to Wille Donker, Joey!
