For 2025, the index rate is set at 6.5%. This means that as of January 1, 2025, alimony will be increased by 6.5%. This makes the index rate almost twice as high as for 2023 and has not been this high since 1983.
This index figure has a major impact on the amount of child or spousal support. And is therefore a serious influence on the alimony payer’s ability to pay and on the space left for the alimony payer to meet his or her other expenses from.
A mathematical example:
You have two children and pay child support of €750.00 per child per month. Child support increases by €48.75 per child to €798.75 per month.
Thus, for two children, an increase of €97.50 per month.
In addition, if you pay spousal support of €1,000.00 per month, it increases to €1,065.00.
Total charges go up by €162.50 per month.
Thus, this high indexation, in combination with legally relevant changes, may trigger recalculation and possible modification of alimony.
